so, i have this new feature which is bestowing a pearl (of wisdom about improving your style and developing your personal style) on all my twitter and fb friends and followers (you can join me here on twitter @missposhbrown or the posh brown fb page). when i can, i will post the fashion pearle of the day on this blog and even go into detail at least once a week (i'll try, no pressure, please! lol)

just in case you haven't followed me on either page yet (and why haven't you?), i'll share today's pearle with you now.

there is inspiration all around. be sure to recognize and then utilize the world around you. this week, i visited two impressive museums: the brooklyn museum and the museum of natural history. both had fabulous exhibits that got my creative juices going. one was called youth & beauty: art of the american twenties. this is one of my favorite eras of history. i will definitely be incorporating some of what i saw into my fashion and my blog in the near future. i'm also reading the last installment of 'the hunger series.' the main character's tomboy, i'm a surivor characteristics have certainly seeped into my fashion soul. so to conclude, i insist you get out and get cultured as much as you can. and then, bring it back to your closet. you'll feel better for it!

fashion fairy god mentor #2- e. badu

so, who is my second fairygod mentor, you ask? none other than the magificent badu. ms. erykah badu is fearless in so many aspects of her life. however, fashion is one where she takes no prisoners. from day one when i saw her sitting at d'angelo's piano (lady remix by d'angelo) looking so beautiful and yet so unusual (especially compared to the usual video hotties) back in 94' or 95'. her head was wrapped high and mighty, her skirt was long and triumphant. i had no idea who this queen was but i wanted to know more. fast forward to 96', erykah badu makes a big splash in music (baduizm) and how to be original. bottom line for badu seems to be "i don't care what you think." when her headwrap began to appear to gimmicky and took away from her message, she got rid of it. when her wig was threatening to blow away during an outside concert in brooklyn (dave chapelle's block party), she whipped it off herself. badu is not interested in selling sexiness. she's more into expressing herself on her own terms. that is exactly why i want some a sprinkle of her baduizm fairy dust on me. erykah embodies the exact elements i crave in a fairy fashion god mentor.

we've finally crowned a new posh brown muse of the moment and it's......solange "new auntie" knowles. lately, ms. sol-angel has been rocking some fierce, bold and unapologetic looks. her eclectic style has been turning heads of many a fashion folk (like lucky magazine for one) and those trendsetters on the street. what i find most endearing is that she is so past looking sexy and much rather be original. that is rare for someone at that tender age (even though she IS a mommy). so kudos to the found her voice and style outside of her sister's huge shadow.

hola, lovelies. so a couple of days ago, i was mentioned how i was taking on some fashion mentors this year. i told you how i wanted these individuals to #1 keep my routine stress free #2 further develop my personal style and #3 maintain my "dowhatchalike" and "idgaf" lifestyle. that was the plan. therefore, it's time to reveal my first style maven mentor: jessie adore. now,i've been meaning to tell you about this lovely lady for quite some time. i've probably been stalking her blog for close to two years because i so "adore" her lifestyle (you'll see her at the top of my blogroll). she's so cute, her hair is cute, her clothes are cute, her apartment is cute, her friends are cute. who wouldn't want that?! plus, she's all short and curvy (so, a gal like me can identify).
but what i love most about her is that nothing seems forced. nothing that she wears or does seems to be because she thinks that's what's hot (as paris would say). i believe this is just her genuine individual style. this is the case whether she's dolled up in a dress fit for a 40's siren or in her jeans at the park.
so, it is official...jessie will guide me through 2012 and remind me that i can do as i please. i, too, can have a fabulous, fashionable life, if i so choose. it was written...

the mentoring program

i've decided that in 2012, i will require a few fashion mentors.

let me explain...my fashion resolution, if you recall, was to be more fearless in my dressing. i wanted to sort of let go and have fun. i believe the exact mantra was "dowhatchalike!' so by mentor, i don't necessarily mean that i want to imitate these individuals' style. that said, all are fierce and are deserving of imitation. but for me, what resounds most is how effortless and fearless they seem to be when dressing. from what i gather, it seems they have an idgaf type of attitude. that is where i want to be. i would love to trust my instincts more. i use to have that before when i lived alone and was more resistant to the opinions of others. in fact, it didn't even cross my mind. maybe because i had a job where i had to be out everyday by a certain time. now working from home mostly, each outfit is a labor of love or laziness. anyway, look out for my three style maven mentors in the posts to come....

the new (year) mantra

in 2o1o, i recall coming up with about five fashion resolutions to follow for that year. looking back, i'm not sure if i met the specifics. however, i know that those goals eventually made their way into my somewhat regular rotation (well, everything but dresses and lots of thrifting). varied hairstyles, red lipstick ect...anyhow, at the start of 2011, i kept it pretty simple with the mantra: be (even more) fabulous. i suppose i succeeded.

my style resolution this time around will fall somewhere in the middle of that detailed and vague arena. the motto for this year is (drum roll please...)..."do whatcha like!" quite honestly, i think many times i put too much thought and effort into putting together an outfit. the pressure builds and in the end, i wind up playing it safe (my version of safe, anyway). in 2012, i just want to have fun and trust my reliable instincts.
i just hope my virgo perfectionist ways don't get in the way......

hi guys! well, today is the last friday of the entire year. 2011 has been....quite interesting. honestly, i guess i can say it was a fairly good year for me. i learned some very valuable lessons that have been crucial to my breaking through. of course, not everything was rosy. however, the situations that could be classified as bad news gave me great insight. for that, i'm appreciative.
my biggest accomplishment this year (well, the one i'm most proud of) was opening the posh brown e-boutique. http://theposhbrownboutique.bigcartel.com/ getting the whole thing together was a feat in itself. however, i feel like it symbolized something bigger. it let me know that i could achieve something i set my mind to despite the negative energy around me. i could knock down a goal although fear mongers were blatantly and also indirectly telling me otherwise. and it wasn't even that big of a deal. that opens the door so many more future endeavors and i'm excited about that!

so, those future endeavors, eh? well, in this 2012 ahead of us, i would like to put my styling and image consulting skills and talents to use. i will elaborate on that when there is more to elaborate on (chill out...i've got 365 days to work it out). i intend to get back to my writing (besides blog writing). and, i would love for my little shop of fashion to grow.

i hope you, too, are reflecting on this past year's lessons and planning success for your new year!

so, i never got into the whole project runway takeover, at first, i didn't have the channel. and then when i did, it didn't hold my interest much. this is even after i got (and then turned down) an internship with one of the finalists. i must admit, i felt kind of out of the loop but didn't want to be socially bullied into watching a show i did not care for. but then something better and much more my speed came along.

a lil' show they call.....all on the line. yes, all on the line with joe zee (from the illustrious elle magazine, of course). now this show is the business. the premise is some designer who had some form of success has fallen into a downward spinal and desperately needs help. enter joe zee to the rescue to figure out where this talented wayward soul went wrong. the issues tend to delve a lot deeper than the clothing. some are not able to vocalize their vision; others are not able to delegate because either they're too controlling or too wishy washy. many are extremely stubborn and fight mr. zee the entire way. what i find most shocking is that after landing a dream opportunity (which is usually a meeting with a major store and a feature on elle.com), many of the lucky designers end up unprepared and playing catch up until the last few seconds. a--mazing!! i'd like to think that if my life and business depended on this one day, i would be there early, prepared and with bells on.
sometimes, things go their way and the buyers decide to work with them. many times, however, they end up disappointed.
anyway, this show is the freakin' business. i highly recommend you watch it...plus, even the commercials are informative and entertaining. i promise. #sundance channel

well, i just finished watching the season finale of all star version of america's next top model. it was going great with the three remaining contestants competing and angelea, the plucky underdog you can't help rooting for,was doing extremely well. commercial break....and then, tyra's announcing that angelea was eliminated without further explanation. it becomes obvious that this whole judging scene has been recreated to choose a new winner. whomp, whomp! technically, lisa the loony one won. however, angelea is the true winner (especially in my eyes). she deserved to win and spreading the good news too early doesn't seem like a good enough reason to be dqed (the rumor is she posted info up on her facebook before taping). tyra, i call foul!!

fair isle sweaters...there was a time when i use to despise them. i marveled at how anyone could possibly think this was fashionable. but then, well, it got cold. and every once in a blue moon, i'd wear one of the sweaters in this fair isle print (but under my coat, of course). for some unknown reason, i eventually grew an appreciation for the look. it's certainly hasn't become a winter staple but now, one of those cozy pieces that let me know winter is here to stay.
by the way, you know who did make the fair isle look a staple in her winter wardrobe? angela chase ( you know, from my so called life). she spent countless dreary pittsburgh days pulling her decorated sweater sleeves over her pale little hands, fretting about jordan catalano acknowledging her presence. that fact alone make fair isle cooler than a suburban pittsburgh winter. here are a few celebs who have also added the look to their repertoire...

so, i was telling you guys about the different projects i'd been working on during my absence here. except, i never got into the actual specifics. so, without further adieu, here is project number one. let me introduce to you......... the posh brown boutique.

yes, lovelies...i have begun my own online thrift/vintage store specializing in clothing & accessories. the merchandise selection is based on the aesthetic of our fictitious muse, posh brown. posh brown is a well spoken, outspoken individual who is not afraid to be seen or heard. posh brown is that girl you see and secretly envy because she is so effortlessly chic. her style can be best described as a brooklyn-bred blair waldorf (a la gossip girl) meets debbie harry (a la blondie).

what's been up (and down)...

i'm back!!!!!!! again. i know, i know. that was quite a loooong hiatus. first, i needed time off to enjoy my summer. but as i prepared to get back to "work," new ideas and projects came to mind and they for whatever reason appeared urgent. (don't be jealous...{in my best ross gellar voice}...we were on a BREAK!) i even considered giving up my blessed blog since it felt like my heart was no longer in it.
but then it hit me...eureeka!!! why can't i do both (a la the taco commercial)?? so to sum up, i will merge my current projects with my old beloved friend.
that called for a new moniker, of course. so...the blog formerly known as 'passionista place' has transitioned to 'the posh brown experience.' the name is based on the brand name i use for my image & style consulting business. i hope you guys will stick around and support my new ventures. and i thank you so much for your patience.

well, i was forced to take a break from the video voyeur feature because i no longer knew how to embed or export the videos. now that i've figured it out, i feel so silly. its so simple! duh, jenna. anyway, iguess i'll double up on the videos to make up for lost time again.
here are two faves from rihanna: rude boy and man down. i really like rihanna and her voice when she's sticking to her west indian roots. both of these videos have a strong island presence as well as beautiful cinematography. and of course, ri ri looks gorge in each one. there was a lot of hoop-lah made over man down from concerned parents. i think her music is no longer meant for kiddies since its so explicitly sexual. however, at least this song/video addressed an important topic kids should be aware of. anywhoo, enjoy the lovely vids.

i've been contemplating making changes to passionista place to make it better for you and easier to keep up with for me. my plan is to have specific features you can count on each week. in other words, i'd like it streamlined like a magazine and their "in every issue" format. one of those features is giving the spotlight to one of the numerous fabulous blogs/websites i come across on a daily basis. i had a whole list of sites i've been meaning to share with you. but then i recently (as in the day before yesterday) came across the blog called advancedstyle and knew it would be perfect. advanced style is all about celebrating inclusive beauty just like we do. they have a particular set area they showcase however: fierce, fashionable mature women! oh, the outfits, the hair and the infinite wisdom..........sigh. i love this blog! below is some advice from one elder who knows her stuff:

1.”Gloves they make an outfit, if it’s the right glove it can do everything for you.”

2.”Getting a good black dress that you can fix up with different wonderful colored scarves.”

3.”Marvelous Jewelry, it doesn’t have to be real or expensive, a strand of pearls can make an outfit.”

4.”A wonderful large fiocco, a beautiful bow or boa.”

5.” The right neckline, if you have a beautiful Décolletage then by all mean shows it.”

6. “I look for the brightest colors in shoes, don’t be afraid to wear them with a dark dress. A bright scarf and shoes and gloves of the same color will stand out against the black background of a dress or suit.”

7. ”The older you get the more elegance you want, you can use great color, but in an elegant way.”

8.”Don’t be afraid to be unique to be different.”

9.”Fishnet stockings, Incredible.”

10. “The real secret is being in love with life and realizing what you have.”

apparently, ms. fenty returned to her roots and reigned as carnival queen in her native barbados yesterday. it looks like a great time and made me a bit nostalgic for my crazy carnival days. hope the n.y west indian parade is a blast in a glass this labor day. but back to rih-rih. it seems after the LOUD tour ended, so did the loud fiery hair. looking forward to seeing what she does next.

hey guys! its august...and i'm back! well, i'm officially back anyway. i thought i'd start things off with a gorgeous spread from elle mexico. of course its the young inguenue selena gomez. seeing as how i'm not her target demographic, i am not extremely familiar with her actual work. what i do know is that she seems like a poised, humble and hardworking beauty. last month, i was able to watch the movie "beezus and ramona" based on my childhood favorite book and she played the title role (beatrice beezus quimby). i thought she did an amazing job and thoroughly enjoyed the show. she appears to be a force to be reckoned with...and i'm not even going to mention whats his name. i think that would take away from her success as an individual ( it also makes me question her choice in men but i guess we all have our faults, haha).

yesterday was my five year anniversary. its a sentence i never imagined i'd be saying. for one, i was never that girl who was overly concerned with getting married. it wasn't on my list of things to accomplish unlike many gals and guys i know and hear about. plus, everything happened so fast, i can barely believe it happened. met one day in april...eloped in a foreign country in july. i now know it sounds like the tales of a flaky or impulsive celebrity it-girl (which i am far from). but what i've found is that my marriage is actually the most sound and stable decision i've made thus far. it (and he) has helped me mature tremedously. finally, its not all about me all the time. love him and us...happy anniversary, my sweet. xoxoxo

oh my god! moments ago i just read the devastating news about amy winehouse's passing. i am so stunned. it seems like a week ago, i was reading some stupid article predicting her death like so many of our talented artists at the young age of 27. i was really annoyed by their insensitivity and arrogance...and now this. this saddens me so much because i was rooting for this girl. her music has been such a treasure for me and i was desperately awaiting new material. i particularly appreciated that she did things on her own terms. i really don't know what else to say right now. what a tremendous loss! more info here :(

just finished watching the very last episode of the Oprah Winfrey Show. i actually didn't cry but i was inspired. this is not unusual after watching oprah. like many, i've grown up watching oprah for most of my life. i suppose i took her and her life lessons for granted. now i understand what a void her departure is leaving. this is especially so now that we have such an abundance for trash tv. anyhow, i wish her continued success in her future endeavors. and, i hope that she continues to feed us those important a-ha moments. ciao oprah!

it feels like its been raining for a week straight here in new york. i do understand that it is a necessary part of the cycle of life, but that doesn't make it suck any less. anyhow, the silver lining on this cool, wet cloud is the need for the trench coat. i've been seeing so many varieties out in the streets and online that have been inspiring. of course, i picked out a few to give you some ideas. i have two in my closet and they both are fantastic (if i do say so myself). one is a chocolate brown with the buttons a little off center and the other is a lightweight but more traditional trench. what kind do you have (or want)?

although i'll have to dvr gossip girl tonight (due to the game), i found this season to be so much more exciting and enticing. besides blair and chuck, there is a new character i'm thrilled to see: the gorgeous tika sumpter. she has brought some much needed color and class to the show (i know jessica zhor is there but they seem to leave her ethnicity a mystery and nicola f. was just blair's flunky). every episode has tika looking even more stunning than the last. i hope that her character can become a little more intriguing in the future. as for chuck, he is more magnetic than ever. hmmm...you know you love me...xoxo

good luck to my guys tonight. the last game proved that they are such a phenomenal team. what a show! in case you missed it, dwayne wade seriously injured my fave celtic rondo. rajon rondo, reaffirming what a class act he is, came back to the court despite the scary injury that would have most done for the rest of the playoffs. anyway, enough gushing! i hope they do well but either way they have a fan in me.
