hey guys!  its august...and i'm back!  well, i'm officially back anyway.  i thought i'd start things off with a gorgeous spread from elle mexico.  of course its the young inguenue selena gomez.  seeing as how i'm not her target demographic, i am not extremely familiar with her actual work.  what i do know is that she seems like a poised, humble and hardworking beauty.  last month, i was able to watch the movie "beezus and ramona" based on my childhood favorite book and she played the title role (beatrice beezus quimby).  i thought she did an amazing job and thoroughly enjoyed the show.  she appears to be a force to be reckoned with...and i'm not even going to mention whats his name.  i think that would take away from her success as an individual ( it also makes me question her choice in men but i guess we all have our faults, haha).

i call bull ish (mr. d. rose)

i want to hate this guy so much.  he may be the reason why my boys don't get their deserved title back.  but alas, derrick rose is just way too likable and talented.  he played such a phenomenal game in the first game of the playoffs, he practically won the game on his own.  and unlike so many chest beating egomaniac b-ballers, his explanations are quite humble and eloquent (even after playing four quarters of basketball).  to top it all off, it appears he has a great sense of style.  how can you resist this man?!  its a lost cause.  besos jenna pearle*

so, it turns out wendy williams can't do it all.  she was booted from the hit show dancing with the stars in second to last place.  hey, at least she tried!  anyhow, she has been blessed with a more prestigious honor (in my opinion).  she is the new cover girl on the may issue of essence magazine.  and, she looks fantastic!!

like all of the greats in history, she  has evolved over the time. from the infamous shock dee-jay you could count on for all the gritty, inside gossip to the respectable princess of morning tv talk, wendy has transitioned into a hero.  how u doing, wendy?!

lost kontrol "kim cover"

this post seemed appropriate after my last one, the right aesthetic. this is lil' kimmie on the cover of kontrol magazine. she is making her way back into the music industry and i'm happy for that. for the most part, she looks good.................i had a lot of trouble even typing that last sentence for obvious reasons. you see, this is what happens as a result of club bouncers, men you love, media...society as a whole telling you, despite what xtina a. says, you are NOT beautiful. such a vibrant, pretty and talented 'regular black' girl! and to have this issue, this obviously MAJOR issue. no one likes rejection. that is for all those self righteous individuals who meet our country's beauty standard but like standing on their soapbox claiming that you should have thicker skin and love yourself and not care what anyone else thinks and blah blah blah...this is what can happen in one of the (dare i say)better scenarios.

kimmie, we love you. besides the horrible plastic surgery, you actually look beautiful and classic here. i don't blame you for whats happened. i know (well, i have a good idea of) where this stems from. i hope we find a cure for this cancer and i'll do what i can here with passionista place and any other project i affiliate with to create and celebrate inclusive beauty.

so, apparently there is a website that takes mr. kanye west's hilarious tweets and uses them as captions for new yorker cartoons. it is hilarious!!! that said, i think if you take most people's tweets to suggest how ridiculous they are, you will succeed. give the guy a break...

allure of lauryn

lauryn hill was my hero when i was in high school. i'm sure i'm not alone in this. for me, she represented a beauty that wasn't recognized much up to that point. mahogany brown skin, african features, natural hair...this was NOT the beauty norm! yet, l-boog's beauty was undeniable. to top it all off, she was intelligent, talented and outspoken. aren't all these attributes the exact makings of a hero? i don't know what her future plans will include but i think she certainly deserves to be celebrated for what she gave me, what she gave us.

one of those gifts she graced us with was style. ecclectic, afrocentric, urban and all around chic, ms. hill rarely disappointed us in her heyday. it was quite influential to my wardrobe during my college life. i'm keeping my fingers crossed that one day soon she'll be back on the scene serving up provoking poetry with a side of sassy style.

the teen vogue handbook...an insider's guide to careers in fashion

i just borrowed this book from the library yesterday and i must say, i am IMPRESSED! see, i didn't have high expectations since i am no teenager (apparently, based on the title, the chosen dempgraphic). but surprisingly, this book is chock full of great information for ANYONE who is interested in a fashion career. it gives useful tips and first hand accounts straight from the mouths of those in the industry. teen vogue handbook also tries to hit on a diverse group from several different aspects of fashion. fashion stylist, editor, blogger, photographer and so much more. and did i mention the graphics?! well, they are lovely colored and clear photographs (many from past issues of teen vogue), fantastic sidebars and quotes. when i return this book to the library, i will be headed straight to my mecca (b&n) to pick up my own copy.
