if i were the beholder...kat dennings

all pics courtesy of fuckyeahkatdennings.tumblr.com

beyonce is beyond beautiful......no breaking news here.  people magazine confirmed this by selecting her to be the most beautiful woman IN THE WORLD.  but..........the decision is just a bit too predictable, too cliche.  and the pictures (in my opinion) were too bland.  they did very little to showcase how stunning she truly is.  but wouldn't it have been refreshing to see a fresh and less conventional beauty on the cover with that title?  when writing this, i thought of a bevy of ladies who are beautiful and less....well, boring.  at first, i was going to showcase a bunch of them here.  however, i changed my mind and decided to settle on one phenomenal beauty.  kat dennings!!!
i have been mesmerized by this gorgeous gal for quite some time.  i think it began with 'nick & norah's infinite playlist.'  i only watched half of it but was still impressed.  (i recall ms. dennings on an infamous sex & the city episodes)  then i got to get a chance for a weekly dose of her when she signed on for the sitcom '2 broke girls.'  what i love about her besides her rare beauty (have you seen those eyes big as quarters and lips that many would sacrifice first borns for) is the intelligence and downtown sauciness she gives off in every role and interviews.  a wallflower, she is not. plus, kat has quite the bodacious body (another area where she could give bey a run for her millions).  she certainly does not fit the cookie cutter mold of what's pretty in hollywood.   nevertheless, i think kat dennings has just as strong a case for "most beautiful woman" as mrs. knowles-carter.  who would you choose for the title?

THE gossip girl, wendy williams

so, it turns out wendy williams can't do it all.  she was booted from the hit show dancing with the stars in second to last place.  hey, at least she tried!  anyhow, she has been blessed with a more prestigious honor (in my opinion).  she is the new cover girl on the may issue of essence magazine.  and, she looks fantastic!!
like all of the greats in history, she  has evolved over the time. from the infamous shock dee-jay you could count on for all the gritty, inside gossip to the respectable princess of morning tv talk, wendy has transitioned into a hero.  how u doing, wendy?!

you look like yes

i understand nicki minaj is attempting to pull of avant garde, over the top looks to fit her big persona.  i get it.  but, sometimes...well, it just seems like WAY TOO MUCH!  i'm sure you've seen her grammy ensemble by now(if not, check it out below).  i must say, i was disappointed.
nicki has made a conscious choice to veer away from the sex pot hook.  i applaud ms. minaj for toning down the sexiness and going past being pretty.  we have SO many artists (many not so artistic) who go the sexy, trashy bad girl route.  its an easy, sucker way to go (if you ask me).  nicki has talent that surpasses her undeniable good looks.  that said, i think she has talent that surpasses the gimmicks as well.  that is why i was pleasantly surprised to see her attire for her all star performance.  it was still wild but not ridiculous.  whoever dressed her understood proportions as well as her brand.  love the look and i hope to see a few more like it in the midst of the madness.

every woman- chaka's long lost daughter

i was just wondering if anybody else recognized the similarities between the legend chaka khan and the darling newbie nicki minaj.  in her heyday, chaka was the outrageous songstress with the elaborate costumes and captivating curves (not to mention the wigs).full circle, huh? check out an old post on chaka here sweet thang, chaka...

what amber taught me... 7 Essentials

  1. don't take yourself so seriously.
  2. image is everything!  (do you even know what she sounds like? but, i bet you recognize her immediately).
  3. embrace and then show off the curves you were blessed with.
  4. girls nite out (or in) is essential..
  5. don't be afraid to be seen in your workout clothes.  exercise is also essential!
  6. know and capitalize on your strengths no matter how odd they make you seem.  (hello, baldhead)  in fact, the weirder, the better!
  7. know that everyone comes into your life for a purpose.  learn the lesson, thank them and move on when its time.
thanks, professor rose!

recently, i heard the news about ms. aretha franklin's successful surgery and now her battle with pancreatic cancer.  i want to wish her well.  i truly hope that she has a speedy recovery.  we need her in our lives.  after all, this is the queen of soul we're talking about here.  the ORIGINAL ri-ri.  show some R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

the right aesthetic

teiko
i had to share this beautiful image of the stunning london born ghanian model, teiko dorno. it would be fantastic to see more models who look like this reflected in our society. what a difference that would make in the self-esteem of all the brown girls (and boys) out there. i was just reading a blog where the writer encountered some blatant but sadly widespread ignorance with a meatpacking district club. several "regular black girls" were not given admittance because they did not meet the standard of the club. this club preferred clientele that was of the more "exotic" type. so biracial, mixed, lighter skin, whiter features ect were the golden tickets. if you didn't look like a video vixen or have a huge bubble ass and long weave or so, your presence was not welcomed. this blog entry made me so ANGRY! but my anger isn't just with this one particular club; its about our society as a whole. there is no such thing as a regular black girl. black girls with black girl features are gorgeous, just like the rest of their counterparts. no ifs, ands or buts about it. curves are just as cute as slim figures. freckles, gap tooth, dark eyes, brunettes, kinky or curly hair are all great assets to have. when will we learn to embrace all types of beauty instead of the same old boring look? read about the incident here for more insight...http:/www.abelleinbrooklyn.com/home/2010/9/1/visual-aesthetics.html let me know your thoughts, if you have an opinion...

nick at nite

i think that nicki minaj cleaned up quite well in her actual outfit (versus the performance costume) for the vmas. her body type looks fantastic in a monochromatic pant onesie. even the pink wig is an asset in a simple sharp bob. and without the crazy mugs, her natural beauty somehow shines through. good look, nicki!

2010 mtv video awards...just my thoughts, man

i got rid of my cable but because i love you so, i went visiting just so that i could watch and report back. unfortunately, i wasn't all that impressed. but here are a few thoughts as well as a few highligt images...
  • gaga looked great and was so gracious. i am a big fan of her devotion to the "outsiders." some of her outfits were hits (my favorite is pictured above). big winner of the night!

  • taylor swift is really working my last nerve. please, PLEASE, stop playing the victim and being so passive agressive. everyone comes across a jerk (sorry kanye) every once in a while. kanye did you a HUGE favor by distinguishing you from the rest of the pop/country blonde singers out there. write him a thank you note instead of a self-righteous boring song. next!

  • drake finally put on a show in his performance. i've seem him at some concerts and wasn't impressed with his boring outfits and simple standing or walking around the stage. great improvement, sir. keep it up!

  • rihanna put a different spin on her usual look. her different spin was very similar to madonna's like a virgin perfomance in the 80's. (was that the point?) her hair and outfit had a very unfinished look to it. if that was the goal then it was successful.
  • katy perry, rihanna and nicki minaj look like they have a great time and i want to fill out an application to join in.

  • never heard of florence but i LOVED the perfomance and the song.

  • jared leto looks just as sexy as he did on "my so-called life" these days. besides lady gaga and eminem, he's the only one i even recall getting an award.

  • while we're on the topic, why did eminem get SO many awards??? i don't get it!
  • i adore sofia vergara (gorgeous and hilarious).

  • eva the diva (marcille) is so gorgeous here. i feel the same about ashley greene. best dressed of the night, along with victoria justice (no clue who she is).

  • kanye killed it! thats what i would like to say but i found his performance mildly entertaining. maybe my hopes were too high. the red ensemble was quite impressive, however.

i think that's all...gone til' september xoxo jenna pearle*
