social september vs. gossip girl

tonight, gossip girl returns! only thing is, i won't be around to watch it. i know, i know, shocking!
well, i promised myself that september would be allocated for socializing as much as possible. at this point, i'm a settled in, married gal. and although i live in nyc and get out quite a lot, its usually with the hubby. this is for several reasons. one is obvious. he's the most convenient, dependable option (and we always have fun). another is my other friends are off doing their own things like being wives and mothers or they're having single (and ready to mingle) fun. i am fine (and completely relish) with alone time. so, all of these factors have left me without a lot of options for socializing with others. i am hoping to open my own business soon and networking is crucial. yesterday, i hung out with some new friends in williamsburg, brooklyn (brooklyn again) at a brunch. they were pretty interesting and i had a fantastic time. tonight, its bingo with the dragqueens on the lower east side. then on tuesday, there's a network and social party on a scenic rooftop. and so the list goes. doing what is outside your comfort zone is a phenomenal way to experience life and i'm up for it. just in case you're wondering, i will watch gossip girl online later or purchase it from iTunes. no worries!

2010 mtv video awards...just my thoughts, man

i got rid of my cable but because i love you so, i went visiting just so that i could watch and report back. unfortunately, i wasn't all that impressed. but here are a few thoughts as well as a few highligt images...
  • gaga looked great and was so gracious. i am a big fan of her devotion to the "outsiders." some of her outfits were hits (my favorite is pictured above). big winner of the night!

  • taylor swift is really working my last nerve. please, PLEASE, stop playing the victim and being so passive agressive. everyone comes across a jerk (sorry kanye) every once in a while. kanye did you a HUGE favor by distinguishing you from the rest of the pop/country blonde singers out there. write him a thank you note instead of a self-righteous boring song. next!

  • drake finally put on a show in his performance. i've seem him at some concerts and wasn't impressed with his boring outfits and simple standing or walking around the stage. great improvement, sir. keep it up!

  • rihanna put a different spin on her usual look. her different spin was very similar to madonna's like a virgin perfomance in the 80's. (was that the point?) her hair and outfit had a very unfinished look to it. if that was the goal then it was successful.
  • katy perry, rihanna and nicki minaj look like they have a great time and i want to fill out an application to join in.

  • never heard of florence but i LOVED the perfomance and the song.

  • jared leto looks just as sexy as he did on "my so-called life" these days. besides lady gaga and eminem, he's the only one i even recall getting an award.

  • while we're on the topic, why did eminem get SO many awards??? i don't get it!
  • i adore sofia vergara (gorgeous and hilarious).

  • eva the diva (marcille) is so gorgeous here. i feel the same about ashley greene. best dressed of the night, along with victoria justice (no clue who she is).

  • kanye killed it! thats what i would like to say but i found his performance mildly entertaining. maybe my hopes were too high. the red ensemble was quite impressive, however.

i think that's all...gone til' september xoxo jenna pearle*

happy school year-baggers can be choosy

how you choose to carry your books and valuables is a big deal. your bookbag or knapsack is an accessory that says a whole lot about you, mainly since you carry it around EVERY day. during my time, jansport and eastpak were essential for the popular. although i had other kinds like floral espirit ect, even i, the non-conformist, owned a burgundy eastpak. here are a few tips to make your school life a little easier:

  • choose a color that will compliment your outfits 85% of the school year (neutrals, navy blue, burgundy, grey are usually safe bets)

  • keep proportion in mind when you are choosing. the bag needs to fit your body type but still fit your books. if you're petite, choose a bag that is also petite. if you're an amazon lady, go for something that is worthy of your statuesque size.

  • if you tend to dress up a lot (dresses, skirts and blouses) perhaps a one shoulder formal bag is best. if you're a jeans and tee kind of girl, you can go with the backpack or more casual one shoulder.

  • if you have dough to spare, buy bags that fit many of the criteria. then, pick and choose, depending on your outfit and mood.

day of rememberance

at this moment, i am wiping away tears as i watch the 9-11 day of rememberance on television. this day gets me everytime. what a surreal moment in time that was. i must admit that since it happened as i finished college and was urgently looking for work (a major turning point in my life), it shook me severely. this is the unstable world i was being thrown into? SCARY! nothing in my life (nothing in the world) was ever the same again. bless all the souls of the departed as well as all the friends and family of those lost. that said, the backlash against muslims is so against what this country is suppose to be about. its against human kindness. i could go on but this not a blog about that. but if in any way i could influence you, i beg that you remember to keep an open mind for all the various people in the world. generalizing and stereotyping is the easy way out and we're better than that.

9-11 All-Star Tribute - What's Going On?

today is the 9th anniversary of the 9-11 wtc attacks, as you know. as of right now, it seems we've made little progress in the rebuilding of the twin towers or a nation of tolerance. i'm not sure why this is so shocking to me. i guess i had high expectations. enjoy this track redone by allstars at the time (actually most of these artists are still pretty relevant, how about that?) of marvin gaye's 'what's going on?' i keep asking myself the same question...

happy school year...scarlet fever edition

this september, i wanted to make sure back to school attire was addressed at passionista place. but, the more i thought about putting together an essential must have list, the more i freaked out. its because everyone's personal style is so different, i wouldn't know where to begin. if you're in high school or younger, i think what is most appropriate is dressing for your age. that means nothing too short or too tight and provocative. you have you're whole life to knock yourself out in that arena. this the time to experiment with various looks and to change your mind whenever you feel like it. that said, i've decided to forgo all of the back to school basics and give you a few suggestions in a three part series. so here we go...

red! red is one of the major colors of the season so why not start young? plus, there is hardly a human being alive that doesn't look good in some shade of the vibrant (or not so vibrant, your call) hue. confused about how exactly to incorporate this fearless color into your new school year warbrobe? well, passionista place to the rescue! just take a look above for the visuals. read the list below for more suggestions.

why not try a red...

  • lip

  • nail

  • hoodie

  • ballet flat

  • chucks

  • cardigan

  • scarf

  • hot dress

  • skinny (cigarette) jean

  • winter coat

coco chanel, the movies

so, netflix finally got around to sending me the Coco Chanel movie i'd been dying to see. the only problem was it was the wrong version. i was looking forward to watching Coco Before Chanel with audrey tatou (sp?), the one everyone has been buzzing about lately. instead, i received Coco Chanel starring shirley mcclaine (not exactly the dame who conjures up elegance and exquisite taste). it turns out kooky mcclaine was exactly the right choice. no, not because she's such a fabulous and talented actress that she could take on the fashion icon with ease. this is true. however, it turns out what gabrielle "coco" chanel was doing and producing at the time was considered kooky and weird. it is quite easy to go against the grain when you have the comfort of wealth and privilege. coco, on the other hand, had neither of those things and still she stuck to her vision despite the snickering naysayers. that theme is what resonated with me the most.
other facts i found interesting was the fact that she began as a milner, constructing avant garde hats. also, i loved the fact that chanel didn't allow love to get in the way of her dream. so many talented ladies fall off their career path when they fall in love.
overall, i enjoyed this movie but now i'm even more starved for the version i was expecting...

posh brown styling-indie queen

style profile

client:
elle jacobs

background:
elle is an up and coming actress who has had some success in quite a few indie films (one of which is being honored at the sundance film festival). Originally from the suburbs of Florida, this twenty-two year old now resides in los angeles. elle previously had no real interest in fashion or shopping. instead, she spends her free time listening to undergound retro bands and going to concerts. she is currently dating a drummer from an alternative band. elle is playing with the idea of having her own girl band some day. ms. jacobs is very particular about her image and fears looking like her worst nightmare, a pop tart.

elle is about 5'7, somewhat curvy frame although still fairly slender. she has reddish auburn hair and almost kelly green eyes.

challenge:
elle is looking to create a unique signature look. she is attempting to build her brand and needs the right that will be memorable and flattering. her aim is to garner more publicity (create a buzz) so that she can obtain more roles and hopefully beauty campaigns. elle is also looking to create an accessory line of some sort in the future. upcoming events: paparazzi shots (regular outfit), press junkets for new movie, dress for Indie Spirit Awards.

solution:
posh brown styling will create a signature look based on elle's musical taste and movie roles. retro 60/70's indie queen. dye auburn hair jet black (mahogany brown if black is too much for her) and keep the romantic waves, part down the middle. wardrobe updates: short colorful sheath dresses (fuschias, emerald green, tomato reds ect), strapless dresses. cigarette pants and jeans (highwaisted), cute tops. vintage jewelry (one of a kind pieces), cutesy flats and kitten heels, t-strap mary jane pumps.
outcome:
dressed for success
