stay tuned...the carrie diaries edition

alas, my once favorite and most fashionable show, gossip girl, has finally ended.  it was past it's prime quite a few seasons ago really.  still, it was hard to say goodbye.  but before i could shed a proper tear, the cw came along with something fresh and fierce to fill in my monday night slot.  enter.......the carrie diaries!!!  this show is a prequel to the sex and the city hbo hit.  we find a teenage carrie bradshaw navigating her way through the suburbs on her way to the fabulous new york life she's known for.  there are quite a few reasons why i love this show but i'll narrow it down to three for you.

1.  the great storylines...
although some parts are a little far-fetched (magically becoming an intern at a prestigous magazine at                sixteen by chance?  yeah, right!), most of the show show is fairly realistic and relate-able  (especially if you're a teenager or was once one).  boy trouble, sibling issues and drama with friends and frenemies abound.

2.  the fashion, of course
although i was far from a teenager, i did witness the wild and wacky and sometimes tacky eighties fashion for myself.  (droops head in shame) and yes, i even participated in it.  that's why i look forward to seeing eric daman's interpretation of what was worn in the era of excess.  so far, i think he does an excellent job of showing what kids were rocking to school and lets his creative juices splash all over the blank canvas when dressing the ny it girls.
check out this blog for more about the clothes:  http://thecarriestylediaries.com/

3.  the diversity of the cast
by now you've heard of the controversy with the hbo show girls and how they've whitewashed the rainbow that is new york.  according to lena dunham, a diverse nyc has not been her reality.  if that's true, the sheltered writer  should certainly get out more.  in the carrie diaries, people of color are more than cab drivers and homeless people taunting the main characters.  in fact, we are play central roles in carrie's life (unlike the grown up carrie) even in the burbs of connecticut.  her best friend (mouse), nemesis (donna la donna) and it girl mentor (larissa) are all women of colour and charisma.  her guy pal (walt) is teetering on whether or not he's gay (he is) and her other bff maggie...well, she just might be white but her ethnic features are gorgous as well as ambiguous.

bestie wishes

every girl needs a bff riding shotgun on the journey called life. someone has to be there to give you perspective, to make you giggle, hold your hand (or your hair, depending) or just to lend an ear. i have been pretty lucky; i've had some really great individuals come into my life. however, i got to thinking who would be my bestie if i were in the celebrity world. here is what it boiled down to: what are your picks?

oprah- what i wouldn't give to be in gayle's shoes! and believe me, its not about the money (well, just a little bit). imagine all the a-ha moments you could have if oprah was your bestie. all the knowledge, all the self reflection. i would SO be living my best life

girls nite out-intimate dinners at o's where we discuss life, book club meetings at o's house, shopping!!!

nicole richie-check her credentials. we were introduced to ms. richie as the ultimate bestie she has a wicked sense of humor and is always up for an adventure.

girls nite activity-road trip people watching (aka making fun of people) at the mall or even a slumber party w/truth or dare...

angela simmons-the little sister in my head. this girl has a great personality to match her creative style. she's a girl's girl. outspoken but sweet, angela is irresistable.
girls nite out- shopping at brooklyn flea, watching sex n the city or any other girlie movies.

jilly from philly (jill scott)-everyone needs a friend like this in their corner. wise and worldly, jill looks like the perfect person to give advice on all topics. its imperative you have someone you can have grown-up conversations with and jill fits the bill. and she looks funny as all get out.
girls nite out-open mic/poetry slam, out for tea n talk, shoe shopping

drew barrymore-make no mistake, ms. b is down for her girls. she's the type of friend that will never put her current beau in front of her longtime chicas. giggly, sweet and a bit spacy, drew has the perfect combination for fun. she's the type to help you party hard, all the while completely sober.
girls nite out-ladies night at any dive bar, taboo nite@ the house or clubbing

amber rose-the friend that causes controversy. there are some nights when you want all eyes on you (and your crew). at least, i do. dressing up in outrageous clothes, dancing wild on the dance floor, meeting as many people as you can...the makings of a beautiful night. amber rose has the star quality, the pizazz to ensure a phenomenal night.
girls nite out: fashion shows, premieres, vip club appearances

runners up: lil kim, natalie portman, zooey deschanel, gwen stefani, kelis

coming soon (toatheatrenearu)

sex and the city the movie 2 is coming out soon and i'm eager to see it. honestly, i'm not expecting much. visiting these four nyers one more time is enough to get me to the theatre. the storyline doesn't have to be stellar. but, if it is, i'll be pleasantly surprised. i love surprises. anyway, look forward to a post dedicated to the ladies of satc the tv version really soon. until then, ciao!

mecca

i'll be heading to my mecca again today...also known as barnes & nobles. these are the two books i plan on purchasing. "the carrie diaries" is out. i was not a fan of "sex n the city" the book. candace bushnell's writing is...different. some things i like...some things i don't. just finished reading "One 5th Ave" during my florida stint and it kept me entertained. i also enjoyed "lipstick jungle" i look forward to the carrie diaries because 1. duh, its carrie bradshaw! and 2. i love the 80's. i am also very into young adult novels since i'm an expert on the subject (says me) and plan to write my own one day (wish me luck). anyway, i'll let you know how it goes.
(btw, i am just finishing up the gossip girl prequel "it had to be you" and loving it.)
the second book "how to never look fat again" is one i saw on wendy. the author was on giving tips from the book on obviously how not to look fat. there was a before and after fashion show and i was impressed. although i am not against people looking fat perse, i am interested in how to choose the most flattering clothing and make-up. as my body changes, its something that i'm forced to deal with. no longer can i wear any and everything, it seems (wiping away a tear). anyway, we shall see if charla k. has the magic formula.
ta ta! xoxo jenna pearle*
